New Features for 2023
The newest model sees few changes, but it does include a redesign of the front grille and lighting elements that make it stand out from the previous models. The old 6.5- and 8-inch infotainment touchscreens are no longer available and have been replaced with a tablet-like 11.6-inch touchscreen that also includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. The 2023 model also includes improvements to the important Subaru EyeSight safety features like adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist. There is also an optional 360-degree camera to keep tabs on all your surroundings. Finally, the Subaru Ascent can come with a Cabin Connect interior speaker system for better communication between the front row and passengers all the way in the back third-row seats.
Onyx Edition Changes
The 2023 model year also adds several improvements and features to the Onyx Edition, which adds appearance upgrades to the base Ascent model. The Onyx Edition features 20-inch black alloy wheels, black exterior trim, grille, mirror caps, and rear spoiler. It also has special gray StarTex water-repellent upholstery, silver or green stitching, and special Onyx logo floor mats. This year, the Onyx Edition will also include a panoramic sunroof and additional driving modes for added capability.
Powertrain Options and Performance
Every Subaru Ascent, regardless of trim level, comes equipped with a capable 2.4-liter four-cylinder boxer engine with continuously variable transmission and Subaru's signature Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. The standard engine produces up to 260 horsepower and can tow up to 5,000 pounds. X-mode with hill descent control is a standard feature for even more confidence and better traction for off-road action or tackling snowy roads.
Interior Layout and Cargo Solutions
Inside, the standard layout is an eight-passenger, two-three-three seating arrangement. The seats are cushy and very comfortable for long rides. You'll have the option for the second row's captain's chairs starting at the Limited trim level, which will cause you to lose one seat but seriously upgrade the comfort level of the second row. Accessing the third row is possible through the space between the second row's captain's chairs if you don't feel like using the one-touch controls to move them out of the way for back-row access. When the third row is not in use, you can fold down the seats to give you extra cargo space, and they fold flat for an even cargo floor. The second row also has flexible stowing arrangements, so you have even more cargo potential.
Safety and Entertainment Technology
With the newest model year comes improvements to some of the safety, driver assistance, and technology. The most significant upgrade on the dashboard is the integrated 11.6-inch vertically oriented touchscreen with large icons and touch response that make it even easier to use while driving and help reduce driver distraction. One of our favorite features is that your phone will automatically work with the touchscreen thanks to wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. No more searching for cords to plug in, simply turn on your vehicle, and your phone will automatically become a part of your Subaru's Ascent suite of technology after initial setup. You'll also notice significant improvements to the adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assistance features.
Trim Level Options
The Subaru Ascent comes in four models and the special Onyx Edition. Since all models come with the same engine, moving up the trim levels adds luxury and convenience features. Second-row captain's chairs start as an optional upgrade at the Premium level and become standard options for the Onyx Edition and the two highest trim levels. Niceties like heated seats will start at the Premium level, and you'll find the panoramic sunroof as an option at the Limited and standard on the Touring. No matter which model you choose, you'll get all the capability and room to comfortably seat all your passengers and handle anything from long road trips to off-road adventuring.
